SIL, MTA or SDA — Which One Is Right for You?
If you've started exploring NDIS accommodation options, you've probably come across the terms SIL, MTA, and SDA. They're often mentioned together, but they each mean something quite different — and understanding what they actually are can make a big difference when you're trying to plan the right next step for yourself or someone you care about.
At Ozsom Care, we believe that everyone deserves a home that feels right for them. So here's a straightforward guide to help you make sense of these three NDIS supports.
SIL: Support That Comes With You, Wherever You Live
SIL is about the support you receive — not the building you live in.
It's designed for people with higher support needs who want to live as independently as possible, with the right help built into their day-to-day life. SIL support can include things like:
- Help with booking, cleaning and personal care
- Assistance with medication management
- Support to build everyday living skills
- Overnight support when needed
SIL can happen in a shared home with other participants, or in your own home. The focus is always on building your independence and confidence at a pace that works for you — while making sure you feel safe, respected, and genuinely supported.
MTA: A Stable Place to Land While You Wait
MTA is a temporary housing option for NDIS participants who are waiting for their long-term housing to be ready. It gives you a stable, supported place to stay during a period of change — usually for up to 90 days.
MTA might be the right fit if:
- You're waiting for home modifications to be completed
- You're moving between housing or support arrangements
- You've recently been discharged from hospital and aren't yet ready to move into permanent housing
It's not a forever home, but it's a real and important bridge. MTA means you don't have to feel stuck in limbo — you have somewhere safe to land while your next step comes together.
SDA: A Home Designed Around Your Needs
SDA refers to the home itself. These are purpose-built or significantly modified properties designed for people with very high support needs or extreme functional impairment.
SDA homes are built with accessibility at their core. Features might include:
- Wide doorways and hallways for wheelchair access
- Ceiling hoists and fully accessible bathrooms
- Emergency communication systems
- Assistive technology to support greater independence
It's important to know that SDA funding covers the specialised housing — not the personal support you receive inside it. Many people who live in SDA also receive SIL, so they have the hands-on support they need for daily life, alongside a home that's built for them.
